1973 Mercury Cougar Scale Model Car

Body, Rims and HubcapsDay 5 -
June 11, 2007

Today I assembled and painted the back part of the rims. I also am debating whether or not to install the front wheels turned instead of straight. I can easily modify the area where the front wheels mount onto the chassis and then glue the wheels on. It would be a nice touch, to say the least.

On at least some model cars, to my knowledge, the rubber tires touching the styrene plastic model parts can affect the parts by making indentations where they were touching if left together for a certain amount of time which isn't to say new models don't come with tires that don't affect the plastic parts. Styrene is most likely the type of plastic your model kits are made from. Some kits I have obtained have been damaged. Please be careful if you own older model kits which might be more susceptible. I have been told by other model builders to separate the rubber tires from the unbuilt model kits I have on hand which isn't to say you should always do as I say, as your model might not be made out of styrene. I place the tires in a small plastic bag and put them back inside the model box, until the model is built of course.

When storing a styrene model, which is most likely the material your models are made out of, separate the tires by placing them in a plastic bag.

When I have built models, most importantly of course, is to make sure the rubber tires aren't directly touching the bare styrene plastic of the rims. Make sure the areas that will be touching are either chrome plated and/or have a good coat of paint on them (and of course, make sure the paint is completely dry before assembly of the wheels).

To the best of my knowledge, this procedure has worked, which isn't to say I could be incorrect as no one has ever complained who purchased one of my built models.
